Frequently Asked Questions

Please, contact us if your question is not answered here.

01  I am not part of the Latin American Postgraduate Programme                                   (LAPP) can I still collaborate with the SCLAPP?

The Committee was first founded to provide support only to LAPP students. Eventually growing to be a part of the Students Union, we decided to collaborate with any student of The University of Manchester interested in our activities as well as with prospective and former students/researchers.

02  I am new in town, where can I find some basic information                             about the academic/general life in Manchester?

In the section of downloads there is a manual that SCLAPP members wrote for you with useful information from topics such as academic situation, bank accounts, accommodation, commute, traveling, food and clothing among other subjects.

03  How can I get teaching assistant duties in the University?

We suggest you to talk to your colleagues in your school as well as with your supervisor to know about available positions, you can also look in other schools that may have lectures where you can demonstrate. Remember that you will need your National Insurance Number to be a teaching assistant. Find more information in the document written by a member of the Committee.

04  I am doing a masters. Is it possible to apply for a PhD while I am                             still here in Manchester?

Yes it is possible, check the document written by one of our colleagues. In general, you should start looking for a project/supervisor at least 8 months before you finish your Masters as this process requires time.

05  I am writing my first paper, is there any useful information I can use?

We suggest you be careful with plagiarism and use the phrase bank provided by The University of Manchester. We from SCLAPP are proposing to organise writing groups with 4-6 students interested in a writing/critics session.

06  How can I legalise my certificate to be valid in my country.

Remember that this formality should be done here in the UK. You can do it when you are back to your country, but you will need to send your certificate to the UK, thus we suggest you to do it while you are here in the UK if possible. In the section of downloads there is a document explaining all the process to follow for the “apostille”. The Committee contacted a solicitor to do this service. However, you can do this process with any solicitor you choose.
